HDB l BTO 5 room
Owned l couples
Completed l 2022
This home was designed for a young couple who wanted their space to exude an antique charm with a touch of 1980s Japanese grocery store inspiration. Natural materials were the focal point, featuring darker wood furniture, green tiles in the kitchen, and wooden flooring.
Before the layout makeover, the living room was situated in front of the bedroom, creating an inconvenient pathway to the kitchen. Even with an open concept, the kitchen felt small. To address this, we switched the living and bedroom spaces, creating a unified living, dining, and kitchen area. An island was added to the center, promoting conversation during meal preparation and offering more hosting space.
Incorporating wooden windows into the design allowed for a new study area with ample natural light from the living room’s large windows. Wooden frames were chosen over aluminum to give the study an 80s Japanese office vibe. Shou-Sugi-Ban, a popular building material, inspired the dark wood carpentry, with groove lines adding a wooden plank illusion. Wooden-style switches with gold accents and ironmongery for the study room’s windows and doors contributed to the home’s cozy atmosphere.
A lengthy settee bench in the living room serves as a sofa and a dining bench. It seamlessly blends into the environment, with wooden planks on the wall mimicking traditional Japanese house beams.
The kitchen was designed to resemble a welcoming café, providing an inviting atmosphere for homeowners and guests. Uneven green wall tiles intentionally create an unfinished look. Display areas in the island and top cabinet allow the homeowners to showcase their handmade stitching creations.
Stepping into this home, you are immediately enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s a space that welcomes both the homeowners and their guests, making them eager to return after their ventures outside.
