The owner’s brief was for a bright, fun Industrial-themed living space for a father and son which had spaces for display while adhering to indisputable layout requirements, so mostly lighter concrete textures with dark wood tones were used to create a cozy yet functional space. The darker laminate, contrasted with the bright colors from the owner’s Toy Collection, encapsulates the owner’s youthful character, and this theme is sprinkled around the home.
Most design features were intentionally designed to draw the eye upwards due to the low height of the ceiling at about 2.4m, therefore, utilizing the full height of the space and giving the illusion of a higher ceiling.
Upon entering the home, a vibrant glass block wall inspired by the tetris game demarcates the foyer space. A round dining table and neon light at the dining area creates a sense of privacy and coziness, while softening the hardness from the concrete and laminate. The kitchen, being functional rather than a display space, uses brighter laminates and patterned tiles to bring out the owner’s character while segregating the space according to their uses. The barn door ties the space back to the funhouse industrial theme.
The main feature of the house is the Rotating Island Tv Console, which rotates towards the living and dining area, doubling up as a display for the owners toys, and circulating energy throughout the house. A brick feature wall leads the eye further into the space, creating a sense of spaciousness while adding a rustic charm to the house. A wall was replaced by a full-height cabinet between the master and second bedroom to create a walk-in wardrobe, and different paint colors were used to distinguish between the restful and functional space, while the play on laminate adds movement and fun into the space.
