This apartment is deeply inspired by nature and its elements such as in biophilic design, while mixing in a mid-century modern (MCM) theme. The owne r of the house is a big lo ver of pla nts, nature, and the MCM design aesthetics. The use of solid American white oak wood floo rs, wood furnitures and carpentry compleme nts the ae sthetic of her ho useplants and at the same time, pays tribute to the MCM style.
The original bedroom wall and kitchen wall were hacked down to bring more light into the old apartment, built in the 1980s. This makes the space fe el more spacious, comfortable, bright and airy, allowing light to flow through the entire apartment freely that matches the needs of her house plants. The old bedroom space was turned into the new living area and the old living area is now the dining area, connected to the now-open-concept kitchen.
The kitchen has been painted a lot of white for the space to feel more open and let light reflect off surfaces. A statement terrazzo island was made in the open-concept kitchen for culinary use and to entertain guests. The use of terrazzo not only pays homage to the MCM theme but also incorporates the use of natural elements such as the stones in the terrazzo.
The hidden door leads to the bedroom, which was painted a calming blue that promotes relaxation and adds a pop of colour in the space that goes in line with the bits of colorful retro furnishings scattered throughout the house. The chevron wood wardrobe adds pattern and gives a soothing effect to the room. Located in the arts central of Bugis, this old HDB apartment built in the 1980s was breathed new life into by design, creating a cosy and comfortable retreat for the young couple.
